I first heard about float tanks while listening to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in my early teens. The idea seemed amazing and I couldn’t believe something like that even existed. Around 5 years later I finally had my first float. I realized right away that this was something I wanted to be apart of. At this point in time, I was at a crossroads in life and had no idea what I wanted to do in regards to a “career”. After floating for the first time, I had the thought of wanting to open a float centre. It was the first idea that truly clicked in my head, and it was something I could really see myself doing. After a little bit of research, I found that Zee Float was already going to be an up and coming float centre to the Hamilton area. I got in contact many months before we first opened, and here I am today! I can honestly say that floating is a true passion of mine. Being someone who is in to exploring and expanding consciousness, this really was a perfect fit for me. I am also really big on the fact that you can heal yourself from within, and I believe the float tank is one of the best tools to achieve that. Spending my time hosting others while they enter a place where the inner work can be done is very fulfilling. Personally, one of the reasons I float is to combat the everyday stresses and anxieties that life has to offer. It also allows me to explore my consciousness, analyze what is going on and figure out many things. I am also a musician and I find that it really helps me create new music. I seem to come up with really cool lyrics and different melodies while in the tank. It really is a wonderful tool for evolving consciousness.

I once heard that life is like a video game, and hopping in to a float tank is like pressing the pause button. It allows you to take a moment and think about everything, reset your mind and hit the start button once again. I think that hitting the pause button is one of the most important things we should be doing as human beings. Whether it be a meditation practice or going for a float, pausing the game for a moment to be present & mindful goes a very long way and is incredibly beneficial to your well-being.

    Terence Mckenna Quote

"Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it's a feather bed.”

Why did you become a float facilitator at Zee?

After learning about floating through the Joe Rogan podcast I knew it was something that I wanted to be a part of. Health and wellness is becoming a large part of everyone's lives and the float tank seems to be the perfect tool to bring it all together by benefiting the body, mind and spirit. With a business degree in project management, I felt Zee Float would be a great canvas to apply my knowledge, skills and experience. As someone who truly believes in the benefits of floating, I wanted to work close with the customers to ensure they were receiving the best experience possible. Not only did I learn a lot about floating and building a business but I learned a lot about myself throughout the process. The community and the people involved in floating is definitely the best part of this industry. I feel there is a lot of potential for float centers to be the next place people come together and I'm very happy to be a part of it.

    Why do you float?

Depends. It has helped me a lot with muscle recovery and relaxation. I have also used it to recover from lack of sleep eliminating the feeling of fatigue and jet lag. While floating you become so disconnected from the outside world that you feel like you are pressing the pause button on life. You are able to take a step back, analyze what's going on in your life and make sound decisions as to what you should start, stop and continue doing in your "game". The focus and clarity you experience in the tank is perfect for exploring the mind.

What song do you like to hear played in the tank at the end of your float session?

    Bon Iver "33 God"

Favourite book in the chill lounge and why?

The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. It's about overcoming resistance to start living the life you love. You can pick up and read any page to discover something useful that you can apply to your day.

Tell us something about you that we do not know?

When my parents first started leaving me home alone I would stand at the top of the stairs, shut all the doors (for acoustic reasons) and sing opera to the best of my ability. I'm a big fan of Andrea Bocelli so Canto Della Terra was a personal favourite of mine.

    What's your hidden talent?

I can replicate the sound of the Saliva Ejector Tool used at the dentist.

    What's your favourite Food?

Burritos. Also dark chocolate almonds and plantain chips for dessert.

    What's your favourite Movie?

    The Big Lebowski

    Who inspires you and why?

Anyone that goes after what they want, no matter what. Everyone has the ability to inspire.

If you could give anyone advice, what would it be?

    A smile goes along way.

Why did you become a float facilitator at Zee?

I moved back to Hamilton from Waterloo in May. I received a gift card from my boyfriend for Zee Float as he had tried floating in Toronto and LOVED it. Determined to get me on board, he thought a gifted float would be a perfect idea - and so it was! I had my first float in the Cabin on June 26th. I was blown away by how mentally calm and relaxed I felt after my float. I was determined to learn more about the industry and floating benefits. I had come across mindfulness research in my graduate studies and was super intrigued about how mindfulness training could not only benefit me on a personal level but how it can also translate to deeper respect for the planet. In July, I requested to be an Energy Exchange at the studio. Once I had my foot in the door, the position eventually evolved into becoming a float facilitator.

    Why do you float?

The main reason why I float is to calm my mind and/or pay attention to my thoughts. I like being in control and to plan EVERYTHING which has resulted in a very overactive mind. Currently in the tank, I try to think about different thoughts or experiences and which emotions are linked to each thought. I am wrapping up my master's degree and having a calm but focussed mind is essential for writing productively.

In addition, I have started exploring how to use floating for creativity. This is a relatively new realm for me.

What song do you like to hear played in the tank at the end of your float session?

I am not too attached to any particular song. As long as it is relaxing, I am okay with it.

Favourite book in the chill lounge and why?

My favourite book is "The Book of Floating" by Michael Hutchinson. I particularly enjoy this book on floating as it draws on scholarly research to explain the various floating benefits and different ways to float. Although reading or hearing about anecdotal floating experiences are interesting and relatable, there is an expanding field of "float literature" that continues to produce replicable findings, defending floating as a therapeutic practice. I think Michael Hutchinson has only begun to touch on the available findings.

Tell us something about you that we do not know?

Since the Fall of 2009, I have moved 20 times. I have lived in Whitehorse, YK; Elliot Lake, ON; Wellington, PEI; Coldstream, BC (hometown); Waterloo, ON; Brampton, ON; Huntsville, ON; Ottawa, ON; Hamilton, ON. In some cases, I have moved back to these cities more than once including Waterloo, Coldstream, and Hamilton. I am very good at packing a UHaul van. Since 2009, the longest I have lived in anyone place has been 8 months.

    What's your hidden talent?

I don't have a hidden talent. I love to dance but I am by no mean a trained dancer. I am totally down to start a dance floor - almost whenever or wherever.

    What's your favourite Food?

    Gourmet tacos.

    What's your favourite Movie?

I don't have a favourite movie. I loved the Harry Potter series. Dead Poets Society was great. I also enjoy dystopian films.

    Who inspires you and why?

Sheldon Solomon, Jeff Greenberg, and Tom Pyszczynski. Their research on how humans deal with their own sense of mortality (Terror Management Theory) has influenced my thinking and the way I see the world. They recently published a book in 2015 titled, "The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life."

If you could give anyone advice, what would it be?

My advice is very simple: be honest and kind.
